Hong Kong PolyU Develops Fabric Lithium Battery Smaller And Thinner

According to Hong Kong's "Ming Pao" website, in recent years, popular wearable electronic products, such as heating jackets and insoles, require lithium batteries, but the lithium batteries are hard and will make users feel uncomfortable. The Department of Textiles and Apparel of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has developed an ultra-soft "library lithium battery" that can be folded and bent to a diameter of about 1 mm. It can be folded for 1000 times without any loss of performance. The team hopes that the "library lithium battery" will be applied in the future. For smart watch straps, hot clothes, etc., the products are more durable when worn.

The team of the Department of Textiles and Apparel of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University spent three years completing the development of a foldable fabric lithium battery.

Zheng Zijian, a professor at the Department of Textiles and Clothing at PolyU, said that the team spent three years completing the development of fabric lithium batteries. The principle is to use polymer-assisted metal deposition to deposit highly conductive metals on treated fabrics, such as cotton and carbon. Cloth, "Making material conductive", replaces the metal foil on the surface of a typical lithium battery to act as a current collector and improve softness.

Zheng Zijian said that the fabric is smaller and thinner than the traditional lithium battery, and the thickness is less than 0.5 mm. For example, the fabric lithium battery can be folded and bent, which is suitable for making a smart watch strap, increasing the storage capacity of the smart watch, and making the product more durable.

"In the past, these smart meters were fully charged for one day. In the future, a strap made of a lithium battery will be used. After charging, it will take up to 2 days to run out of power," said Zheng Zijian.
